A LITTLE ABOUT US
Fred Ernest Finch started with virtually nothing in 1955 with financial help from his mother and guidance from his father in law who never took an active part not being able to drive. His own father William Finch fell in Gallipoli in 1915.
During and after the 2nd world war Fred Finch worked for MT section of the Air Ministry transporting aircraft parts around Britain and later driving staff in coaches to Handforth and Woodford bases. He was given the opportunity to provide a contract coach to these bases from the Wigan area eventually increasing to 2 Bedford OB coaches covering St Helens also. This continued until the closure of the bases around the late 50’s.
With the closure of cotton mills in Wigan this lead to workers commuting to towns like Bolton, Radcliffe and Rochdale which saw convoys of coaches leaving Wigan on work days. Other industries followed including taking staff to the ROF at Euxton and taking
Prisoners to courts.
When the recession came in the 80’s it meant reducing the fleet of coaches by one or two from 7 in total. This was a difficult time for small operators with factory closures until de-regulation came in which gave them the opportunity to tender for routes, school and college contracts. The demand for large capacity vehicles meant introducing double deckers into the fleet becoming more of a bus & coach operation for school contracts and private hires up to today.
Brian came into the business when his father passed away in 1974 then his mother in 1978. When his brother Raymond decided to retire on medical grounds in 1991, Brian became sole proprietor and later wife Pauline became a partner.
